What exactly childhood and why does it exist?

For most of human history, childhood didn’t exist. There was no middle ground between infancy and adulthood. It has only been since around the 16th and 17th century that you start to see its emergence, and since then the time frame during which a person is not an infant and not quite an adult has expanded continuously. Why is this happening? What is the purpose of keeping people under the umbrella of childhood for so long? Is it necessary for the stability of our society? Have a seat, grab a drink, and enjoy while the SPP team tackles this topic.
