De-Extinction

Let’s get to the business of bringing back giant sloths.

For real though, this week’s episode covers a topic that’s been floating around the common discourse for a while now. Yeah, I guess we’ve really been talking about it sinceĀ Jurassic Park came out, but there’s been a resurgence since scientists have actually started to approach the ability to bring species back from extinction. With that, we discuss some of the mechanics of de-extinction and the moral philosophy that should help us decide if we should actually follow through with bringing species back, and if so to what degree is morally responsible.

What responsibility do we have to the other species on earth, particularly those whose extinction we’re responsible for?

What responsibility do we have to the remaining species and the ones we bring back?

But regardless of the answers to any of that, I just want a giant sloth to snuggle with. For some reason that’s a lot more appealing than a bear…
