Eminent Domain

Defined as the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation, thisĀ is a topic that tends to ruffle feathers. This week, Mike walks us through the where we got the idea for eminent domain, how it was originally intended to be used, how our founders changed it, and how it has been used in recent years. Then we tackle the question of: Is there a role for eminent domain in a free society? How much compensation is enough? Is there a situation in which the government doesn’t have to provide compensation?
