A Review of the Idea of “Separation of Church and State”
Many of us are taught in school about the separation of church and state and that it is outlined in the first amendment quite clearly. However, this isn’t even close to true. The relevant section of the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” which clearly doesn’t not specifically reference a “wall of separation” between church and state.
With that out of the way, we will address where the concept of “separation of church and state” comes from. We will also tackle the two clauses regarding establishment of religion and free exercise, and how they relate to government involvement and entanglement with religion.
