What happens when you try to get the state out of marriage?
Join the SPP team while we talk to Neil Patrick Carrick about just that. About 1 year ago, he filed a lawsuit with the state of Michigan to try to address an issue of growing concern. In Michigan, a pastor cannot solemnize (duly perform) a marriage ceremony without authorization from the state beforehand. While the law has not been pursued by authorities, the goal of the lawsuit is to remove the threat of jail time from pastors who wish to marry people who have no desire to utilize legal benefits of being married.
As we discuss further, we address the issue of what marriage is at its core and what place it has in society.
